Removable appliances
The function of removable appliances is to move one or several teeth in order to correct their position or alignment. But that will only happen if you thoroughly follow these instructions:
- You should wear your appliance 24 hours a day. Only take it out to brush your teeth, or if we’ve told you that you can take it out to eat (this does not apply to every removable appliance!) You can keep it on while playing sports, except contact sports, like hockey, football, etc.
- Always place your appliance in your case as soon as you remove it from your mouth. This will prevent you from breaking or losing it. Never store your appliance in your pocket because it’ll break if you sit on it. If you go to a restaurant, never put it in a napkin. Numerous patients make this mistake, and end up throwing it in the garbage.
- N.B. There will be a fee to replace a lost or broken appliance.
- Always store your appliance out of reach of cats and dogs. (They will eat it!)
- Each time you brush your teeth, use your toothbrush (without toothpaste) to clean your appliance. For a deeper cleaning, soak your appliance for about an hour in a glass of water mixed with about half a cup of white vinegar. This can be followed by a gentle brushing. Never use denture-cleaning products because they can weaken the solders on your appliance. Your new appliance may change your pronunciation for a few days. In order for your tongue to get use to your new appliance, you should talk and read out loud. [If your appliance hurts, or if it does not sit firmly on your teeth, please give us a call and we will adjust it right away.]
If you follow our instructions, you’ll be well on your way to a new, healthy smile!
